Just a reminder to everyone that RAT is this Saturday, October 12th, 4 p.m.--8 p.m. at the Barnes and Noble in Pittsford Plaza. We have a special guest at RAT this year: TBF author A.S. (Amy) King. She will be joining us around 6 p.m. for pizza (courtesy of TOPS Markets. Thank you TOPS!) and around 7 p.m. Amy will be doing a reading/presentation followed by a signing.
So 21 days until Halloween and what better way to get into the Halloween spirit is by reading a I-will-have-nightmares-for-a-very-long-time thriller. I highly recommend Unbreakable by Kami Garcia, co-author of Beautiful Creatures. Check it out:
I never believed in ghosts. Until one tried to kill me.
When Kennedy Waters finds her mother dead, her world begins to unravel. She doesn’t know that paranormal forces in a much darker world are the ones pulling the strings. Not until identical twins Jared and Lukas Lockhart break into Kennedy’s room and destroy a dangerous spirit sent to kill her. The brothers reveal that her mother was part of an ancient secret society responsible for protecting the world from a vengeful demon — a society whose five members were all murdered on the same night.
Now Kennedy has to take her mother’s place in the Legion if she wants to uncover the truth and stay alive. Along with new Legion members Priest and Alara, the teens race to find the only weapon that might be able to destroy the demon — battling the deadly spirits he controls every step of the way.
Personally, I cannot watch horror movies, read horror books or go through a haunted house. I'm not afraid to admit that I'm a wimp when it comes to evil spirits, paranormal activity and exorcism. So you can imagine what it was like when I read the first chapter of Unbreakable in the middle of the night with nothing except for a book light. I literally couldn't go back to sleep until it was dawn. Yes, I was scared out of my wit's end. Yes, I was so freaked out that I almost stopped reading. Did I stop? Absolutely not!
The best way I can describe Unbreakable is that it's a mixture of Angels & Demons, Supernatural and Ghost Adventures. It's similar to Angel & Demons because the foundation of the novel is based on the ancient war between Illuminati and the Catholic Church. The Illuminati wanted to destroy the Church while the Church or the Legion of the Black Dove, wanted to defeat the Illuminati. During this ongoing war, the Legion foolishly decided to summon the greater demon, Andras, and use him as a weapon. But Andras was too powerful and escaped.
For over 200 years, Andras has been hell-bent--no pun intended--to wipe out all five Legion members by allowing his minions, evil poltergeists (or evil spirits) and kill every member. How does the Legion protect itself you may ask; by guns of Holy water and salt of course! Hello Supernatural! Like Dean and Sam, the Legion know how to kick butts.
Throughout the book, Kennedy and the other Legion members travel across the U.S. to retrieve pieces of a weapon to destroy Andras. Ghost Adventures joins the party when the pieces are hidden at different haunted places in America. Obviously there are some evil spirits who want to "play" games like "Bury the Legion Alive" and "The Most Dangerous Game: Legion vs. Dead Prison Serial Killer" and all of that good stuff...
Have no fear, readers. Just have a vial of Holy water, salt and a cuddly stuffed animal with you and you're good to go!
Happy
Miranda
